WiscMail - Configure SMTP Authentication To Use Port 587


Some Internet service providers have blocked access to SMTP port 25 for sending mail. These ISP users will receive errors when they try to send mail with an email client configured to use SMTP Authentication on port 25. Some users will be able to send mail by by configuring their email client to send mail on port 587 instead.

Disclaimer: This configuration is not guaranteed to work for all users. If you configure your client using the instructions below and continue to have sending problems, please view WiscMail - Cannot Send Mail From Off-Campus Networks.

Use the documents referenced below to configure your e-mail client but make the change specified.

Thunderbird

In step 15 of the documents below, make sure that the Port number is set to 587 instead of 25.

Windows (Vista) Mail

In step 18 or 19 of the documents below, confirm that the Outgoing Server (SMTP) port is set to 587 instead of 25.

Outlook 2007

In step 7 of the documents below, confirm that the Outgoing Server (SMTP) port is set to 587 instead of 25.

Outlook XP/2003

In step 7 of the documents below, confirm that the Outgoing Server (SMTP) port is set to 587 instead of 25.

Outlook 2000/Outlook Express

Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express do not work with SMTP port 587 - please try configuring your client to use port 465 instead.

Netscape

In step 14 of the documents below, make sure that the Port number is set to 587 instead of 25.

Mail.app 3.x

Perform the following:

  • Within Mail.app, go to Mail | Preferences
  • Click on Accounts and then Account Information.
  • Under Account Information look for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
  • Click on the drop down arrow and select Edit Server List...
  • Select the existing WiscMail Server. The server name for this server should be smtpauth.wiscmail.wisc.edu
  • Click Advanced and change the server port to 587.
  • Ensure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked
  • From the Authentication drop down, select Password
  • Fill in Username and Password with your NetID information.

  • Click OK and then close the preferences window.
  • Save the changes, and try sending mail again

Mail.app 2.x

Perform the following:

  • Open Mail.app and go to Mail | Preferences
  • Click on Accounts and then Account Information.
  • Click on Server Settings...
  • Change the server port to 587.
  • Ensure Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked
  • From the Authentication drop down, select Password
  • Fill in Username and Password with your NetID information.

  • Click OK and then close the preferences window.
  • Try sending mail again.

Entourage 2004/2008

In step 8 of the documents below, under the Outgoing Mail Server directions, check the box labeled Override default SMTP port and change the port number to 587.

Entourage X

Entourage X does not work with SMTP port 587 - please try configuring your client to use port 465 instead.
