Office 365 (Thunderbird) - Configure Thunderbird

This document explains how to connect to the Office 365 service.

Configure Thunderbird for Office 365

To configure the Thunderbird email client for IMAP to access the Office 365 environment, follow the steps below. Note that these instructions and screenshots are from a Windows machine. The same steps apply for Thunderbird on any operating systems, but there may be slight variations.

  1. Log into Outlook Web App (OWA) client. You will need to obtain settings for configuring Thunderbird from the web client.
    • Click on the Settings settings (gear icon) in the upper-right corner and select Options
      OWA Options menu
    • Click on Settings for POP, IMAP, and SMTP access... A window similar to the one below will open. Note the IMAP and SMTP settings. You will need to use these in the coming steps.
      OWA server settings
  2. Launch Thunderbird. If you have no other accounts configured, you will be prompted to configure a new account. Otherwise, click on Tools | Account Settings | Account Actions | Add Mail Account
  3. On the Mail Account Setup window, enter the following for each field:
    • Your name: Your name as you'd like it to appear
    • Email address: netid@wisc.edu or first.lastname@wisc.edu or name@domain.wisc.edu
    • Password: Enter the password for your account
    Thunderbird account info
  4. Click Continue
  5. Thunderbird will fail to find the settings. You will be given the opportunity to manually enter the server settings (see screenshot). Enter the information from the OWA IMAP and SMTP settings.
    • Incoming:
      • Type: IMAP
      • Server hostname: IMAP setting server name from OWA
      • Port: 993
      • SSL: SSL/TLS
      • Authentication: Autodetect
    • Outgoing:
      • Type: SMTP
      • Server hostname: SMTP setting server name from OWA
      • Port: 587
      • SSL: STARTTLS
      • Authentication: Autodetect
    • Username: netid@wisc.edu
    Thunderbird account settings
Note: for further server/account details, see - Office 365 - Server and Account Configuration Settings.
  6. Click Re-test.
  7. If you entered the settings correctly, it should indicate "The following settings were found by probing the server".
  8. Click Done
  9. Setup is complete. Email data will take some time to sync.

Important: Please complete these steps before using your Thunderbird client.

  • Reconfigure folder mapping:

Clients configured using Microsoft Exchange protocol use different folders for some of the primary mail folders. For consistency, we highly recommend that you configure Thunderbird to use these same folders. This will make it less confusing if you also use the web client for Office 365 or a different desktop client that is using the Exchange protocol.

    1. Right-click on your Office 365 account and select "Subscribe..." from the drop-down menu.
    2. Place a check-mark within the box next to each of these folders: "Drafts | Deleted Items | Sent Items".
    3. Click Subscribe button.
    4. Click OK button.
    5. Right-click on your Office 365 account and select "Settings..." from the drop-down menu.
    6. Under your Office 365 account, select "Server Settings".
    7. Within 'Server Settings | When I delete a message' section, select "Move it to this folder:" and use the text box next to this setting to select the "Deleted Items" folder.
    8. Under your Office 365 account, select "Copies & Folders".
    9. Within 'When sending messages, automatically | Place a copy in:' section, select "Other" and use the text box next to this setting to select the "Sent Items" folder within your Office 365 account.
    10. Make sure "Drafts" folder is selected within your Office 365 account under 'Drafts and Templates'.
    11. Click the OK button.
    12. Restart Thunderbird

  • Disable the adaptive junk mail controls:

    1. Click on the email address you just configured in the left-hand pane.
    2. Click on View settings for this account.
    3. Click View Settings for this Account

    4. Click Junk Settings from the left-hand option pane.
    5. Click Junk Settings

    6. Uncheck the box for Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account.
    7. Disable Adaptive Junk Settings

    8. Click the OK button.
