Learn@UW - Embedding Media Objects into Content

This document describes how to embed media object types into content, the available media object types, and associated supported file types.

In principle, the types of media objects that can be embedded are listed in the table below. However, because not all formats work correctly when embedded into a Learn@UW course, embedding media objects into Content generally is not the recommended method. For a basic overview on using audio and video, refer to Learn@UW - Important Considerations When Using Audio and Video. For more comprehensive information on using audio and video, refer to Learn@UW - Using Audio and Video.

Embedding media objects into content is done within the HTML Editor:

  1. Place cursor where you want to insert the media object.
  2. Click the Insert Object icon. ( insert object icon ).
  3. Select Course Object to use an object file in your course files or Upload Object to upload an object file that resides on your computer.
  4. Select the Object Type from the drop-down box in the "Insert Object" dialog.
  5. Press Browse to select a media object file from your course files or computer (or type in the complete course path and file name).
  6. Select height and width (in pixels) for the embedded media object (which can be re-sized later.)
  7. Specify whether you want the media object's controls to be shown and if it's automatically played when the content is opened.
  8. Press Insert to return to the HTML editor.

The supported file types, each with its own extension, are given in this table:
